TREE CITY PROCLAMATION

Tree City USA is a national program that recognizes communities for their efforts to manage and improve their public trees.   The Village must re-qualify annually to maintain their Tree City USA designation.  In continuing our qualification, we must meet four standards to be designated as a Tree City USA community: maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, spend a minimum on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day.  The Village believes that this annual recognition shows residents that trees, conservation, and the environment are important to our community.  The Village will plant several specimen trees during the 2024 /2025 planting season (which runs from the first frost in Autumn, 2024 through April 2025).   The first such tree – a flowering dogwood tree, was planted on Dec. 6 along Hunt Lane’s walking path.

Mayor Ceriello read the following Proclamation and moved to adopt December 6, as Arbor Day in the Village of Munsey Park, seconded by Trustee LiCalzi and approved by all.

WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of

Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees, and

WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the

planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska, and.

WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world,

and

WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind

and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean

the air, produce life-giving oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife, and

WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our

homes, fuel for our fires and countless other wood products, and

WHEREAS, trees in our Village increase property values, enhance the

economic vitality of business areas and beautify our community, and

WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and

emotional renewal.

PROCLAIMED, that the 6th of December 2024, will be declared Arbor Day

throughout the Village of Munsey Park.

Signed this 6th Day of December 2024
